Thanks to their ability to capture data from aloft, drones can perform surveying, photogrammetry, 3D mapping, topographic imaging and more with increased efficiency.
Advantages of drone mapping
Using drones for surveying has the following advantages:
Speed - Drones can scan hectares of land in a fraction of the time it takes to manually survey the land, especially in areas with difficult terrain.
Reduced costs - The drone can capture data faster and more safely, which can reduce costs.
Improved data quality - Drones continuously scan and create thousands of measurements, resulting in incredibly detailed and highly accurate point files within a few millimeters when combined with traditional survey methods.
Types of aerial surveys with drones
Baseline mapping/preliminary site assessment - Used to determine the most appropriate use of land in terms of development and planning or construction purposes. It uses a drone to collect imagery and topographic relief of the land to provide insight into the current condition of the land, slope and topography so that the architect or developer can make better decisions about its use.
ALTA surveys - Using a drone and a combination of software including PIX 4D/PIX 4D Survey and AIRworks, we are able to reduce the cost of large ALTA surveys if the project is a good candidate for drone filming. The drone is able to fly over the site and plot many of the parcel features, which reduces the need for the team to manually measure all of the improvements on the property and greatly reduces the number of man hours required.
